One fine day in January, we visited Masa-Masa, Jalan Subak Telaga NO.9, Banjar Manyar, Ketewel - Gianyar, to meet Mr. Micky Indra, founder of Pithecanthropus -Bali — one of the companies that sells fashion products and Indonesian cultural artifacts. Before entering the parking area, a relaxed atmosphere from a shady tree that shaded the road greeted us. The sky was slightly overcast, but it didn't affect our warmth when we met Mr. Micky Indra. Wearing a white t-shirt, Sembagi Batik shirt, jeans, and neat, simple hair, Mr. Micky greeted us with a smile and laugh.

Naomi Samara  and Salvita De Corte paint arbitrarily; fluid figures and fleeting moments. They find safe space in each other, the ability to express their emotions and the seeing of everyday shenanigans. Through this mental space, they bring it out alive in their latest exhibition, “Present Space”. We met them on a balmy January morning in Titik Dua, Ubud, in between their exhibition tour. Aside from being women in front of canvas, Naomi and Salvita are jewelers, makers, writers, actresses - every bit of this and that.

With the calm and warm ambiance of the Sanggingan area. In one of the good bars in Ubud, we got a chance to gaze deeper into KAWI UBUD. We encountered one of the owners, Christian Tseng. At least 15 years of having a relationship and memories with this Island, seeing a lot of transformation small or big, here and there. Christian still finds this island intriguing in various ways.

2017 marks the year of transformation for Zhi Xiong Chan. In London, he started an architecture and interior design practice under the name ZXC Studio. But it was not until he moved to Bali that this explorative, collaborative, and sensory driven studio flourished. We talked to Zhi Xiong Chan about movement and people; how these two elements enrich a space and transform it into a place.

The wind brushed over the acres of green rice fields. Amid the hues of green, is a new dining place and concept store, Le Bajo, where we enjoyed a cup of coffee and a warm conversation with Emmelyn, the person behind the scene of many renowned curated stores.

Mr.Jimbo spent a few days in Bali, exploring the island, and having an art residence in Devto Print Studio in Ubud, which made him feel like he could escape from life temporarily. “Bali always gives a feeling of slowness, unconsciously or consciously. Every time I breathe the air from this island I can’t rush myself”. The birds were chirping in the Ubud rice field, trying to join the harmony of the nature surrounding us that day.

It's sunny, and the traffic is high around the Canggu area. People gather with the sun and start to feel the summer season coming to them. Mrs. Fahrani, with her bike, enjoyed the ride and the winds from Denpasar to Canggu beach to have little conversations with us. We drink coconut water and have a little slow walk to feel the ocean water touching our feet. It was a pleasant and restful feeling at that time.

The rain that came without any invitation left us with a smooth breeze of fresh air. All of the people in Semarang Gallery move around, preparing for the upcoming exhibition that will be held that night. We sat together with the owners of Semarang Gallery inside their office. The sound of the rain got smoother and faded, replaced by the sound of people muttering.

A musician by the name of Rekti Yoewono pierced through the industry with his band The S.I.G.I.T as a rock revivalist since 2003. About 19 years later, we met him in Berawa, Bali. He was not rocking in some concert but relaxing at a warung. We had a pleasant conversation about rock through his musical voyage, roll through his love for bicycle, and how it both connects as his own version of a “rock and roll” life.

Sometimes Marshella comes to Bali for work and other times for a break from the crowded city life; enjoying her time exploring the Island of Gods alone or with her family members. In the middle of a sunny day, we had a good time with Marshella Jastine, grassing around the restaurant and enjoying the mesmerizing sunset, while watching people playing volleyball and gathering around together between the white sand, and the clear waves welcoming the sunset that is coming down soon.

Behind Kura Kura Beer there’s Putu Wiranatha that tries to find balance in everything he does. It accidentally resonates with his favourite story of Bali being in the back of a balancing kura-kura or turtle. We get the brewery grand tour at Plaga to talk with him about everything from the craft beer business and cultures to making time to enjoy life.

From Goa Gajah to Sayan House with Mr. Eddie Hara. We have a little walk, with a bit of sweat under our shirts, and heavy breathing in the midst of the hot weather in Bali. But the laughters of that day will be a good memory for us. We can feel his authenticity not only from his visual art but also from his personality as a human in this era. He gave us a lot of stories about his journey, cultures, and differences between creative industries then/ now.

On a hot Balinese afternoon, with the kind of heat that comes before a tropical storm, Feby and Tipi Jabrik are at the long family table at the back of Good Mantra. The restaurant is located at a busy intersection in one of the backstreets of Berawa. Inside, the restaurant feels like a laid-back living room with people working away on their laptops and chatting among themselves amidst the artworks and surfboards displayed throughout the open room.
